Safe Road Operations Challenge

Shaping the future together

The Abertis Foundation and "Beyond Roads | Abertis Innovation" continue their commitment to innovation through this global call.

We are looking for innovative solutions that protect motorway workers operating in live traffic environments.

CHALLENGE

How can innovation help protect motorway workers operating in live traffic environments by anticipating risks and preventing accidents before they occur?

USE CASE 01

Solutions capable of predicting hazardous situations before maintenance or operational teams are exposed to them.

  • Predictive risk assessment using AI.
  • Intelligent monitoring of approaching vehicles.
  • Detection of dangerous driving behaviors.
  • Computer Vision systems capable of identifying unsafe situations.
  • Infrastructure Digital Twins for operational planning.
  • Smart signage capable of dynamically adapting to risk.
  • Predictive weather and environmental risk monitoring.
  • Dynamic risk maps combining multiple real-time data sources.
  • AI systems capable of recommending safer intervention windows.
  • Intelligent operational planning based on traffic evolution.

Startups proposing alternative applications aligned with the challenge are also encouraged to participate.

USE CASE 02

Technologies capable of reducing the need for workers to remain in hazardous traffic environments.

  • Inspection robots.
  • Autonomous or remotely operated maintenance equipment.
  • Drone-based inspections.
  • Connected work zone technologies.
  • Real-time worker alerts through wearable devices.
  • Intelligent convoy systems protecting intervention teams.
  • Operational support systems for emergency response.
  • AI assistants for field operations.

Startups proposing alternative approaches that contribute to safer motorway operations are welcome to apply

USE CASE 03

Solutions capable of increasing driver awareness, influencing driving behaviour and reducing the likelihood of accidents before vehicles reach operational areas.

  • Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications.
  • In-vehicle alerts for approaching work zones.
  • Intelligent speed adaptation systems.
  • Dynamic warning systems based on traffic conditions.
  • AI-powered risk communication to connected vehicles.
  • Smart signage that adapts to real-time operational risks.
  • Driver attention monitoring and behavioural nudges.
  • Integration with navigation platforms to anticipate hazards.
  • Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS).
  • Technologies that encourage safer driving around temporary work zones.

Startups proposing alternative approaches to improve driver awareness and behaviour around road operations are also encouraged to participate.

From Challenge to Implementation: Success Story of the “Drone Challenge”

2023 WINNING SOLUTION: THE PILOT

Azisa & Aren

The award-winning project, jointly piloted by Azisa, based in Gijón, and Aren, located in New York, marks a milestone in infrastructure inspection. Azisa brings its expertise in drone-based inspection services, while Aren contributes its advanced AI technology applied to structural management.

The initiative will take place at the "Las Rosillas" Bridge on the RCO, between the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato, Mexico. This project aims to inspect the bridge using drones equipped with various sensors to model the structure and employ AI to identify, classify, and assess the criticality of different types of deterioration. The pilot, involving Abertis experts from Mexico, Chile, Spain, and Italy, will run from October 2024 to January 2025, providing end-to-end industrial inspection services through unmanned vehicles (drones, UGVs, ROVs, and USVs), as well as software tools that generate 2D and 3D data for analyzing damage to concrete and metal structures.

Full inspection by drone of the Rosillas Bridge on the border between the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato.
